Choosing a trainer for your Doberman

Look for clear explanations, humane methods and a plan that fits your dog. A confident sales promise is not evidence of suitable care.

Ask about methods before booking

Ask how the trainer teaches a new skill, handles a mistake and responds when a dog is frightened. Request concrete examples rather than a broad label. The current AVSAB trainer-selection statement is a useful reference for evaluating welfare, education and professional conduct.

Verify relevant education and experience

Check stated qualifications through the issuing organization when possible. Ask about work with situations like yours and the limits of that experience. A title or social-media following does not tell you how the person will handle your dog in a difficult moment.

Understand the first consultation

Find out what information the trainer needs, whether you will participate, how progress is recorded and what happens if the dog becomes uncomfortable. Agree on the scope, fees and cancellation arrangements in writing. Keep a copy so the practical expectations remain clear.

Watch for concerning promises

Be cautious about guaranteed outcomes, pressure to commit immediately or an explanation that treats every problem as dominance. Ask whether you can observe a session and how the trainer protects choice and comfort. If you do not understand a technique, pause and ask before it is applied to your dog.

Check the referral plan

A professional should be able to explain when a veterinarian or another qualified specialist needs to be involved. Describe concerns accurately rather than seeking a single obedience fix for fear, pain or severe distress. Choose support that includes the household and adapts when observation shows a plan is not working.
