Cardiac screening: know what each test asks

Discuss echocardiography and rhythm monitoring with your veterinarian or cardiologist. Keep dated results and an individualized follow-up plan.

Echocardiography: structure and pumping

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound examination of the heart. It helps the clinician assess structure and function. Ask what the written findings mean for your dog and how they fit with other information. A summary word such as “clear” is less informative than the actual dated report.

Holter monitoring: rhythm across time

A Holter device records heart electrical activity over an extended period, commonly while the dog follows an instructed routine. Ask the clinic about preparation, handling the device and documenting events. Do not invent a protocol or remove equipment without following the team’s instructions.

Keep genetic and clinical information distinct

A DNA result refers to variants included in that test; it is not an echocardiogram or rhythm record. Bring relevant reports and ask how each contributes to the assessment. Do not use one result to assume that all other screening questions have been answered.

Agree timing and follow-up personally

Published screening guidance provides context, but the responsible clinician should determine the plan for your dog. Discuss age, history, previous findings and new symptoms. This guide does not assign a universal appointment interval or tell you that one result rules out future disease.

Example: a screening records index

Create one line for test type, date, clinic, report location and follow-up question. An illustrative owner realizes the rhythm report is missing and requests it before the next consultation. The index improves continuity; it does not interpret measurements or determine risk.
