Read the model’s measuring instructions
Use a soft tape and record the locations and units specified by the manufacturer. Measure without pulling the tape so tightly that it changes the body shape. Compare with the current chart for that exact model. A breed or weight suggestion cannot establish fit on its own.
Adjust before attaching the walking lead
Introduce the harness comfortably and follow its fastening instructions. Check that straps lie as intended and buckles close correctly. Do not force your dog through a prolonged fitting session if it is distressed. Ask a suitably qualified professional for help with handling or uncertain fit.
Check the fit in motion
In a secure area, observe standing, walking and turning. Look for shifting, rubbing, pressure points, restricted movement or an opportunity to back out. A brief indoor check does not prove escape resistance outdoors. If the fit cannot be made suitable within the design’s adjustment range, choose another size or design.
An illustrative measurement record
Imagine an owner records a 72 cm chest measurement using a particular model’s instructions. They still need that model’s current size chart and a fit check on their dog. The number is a fictional example of how to record a measurement; it is not a Doberman size recommendation or a result from our testing.
Record what you checked and recheck
Note the model, chart date, measurement units, adjustment and what changed during movement. Inspect straps, hardware and stitching before use, and repeat fit checks as your dog grows or its condition changes. Walking equipment is not automatically suitable as a vehicle restraint.

Common questions
Can I choose a size from the breed name?
Use the model’s chart and actual measurements, then check fit on your dog. Breed labels alone do not establish fit.
Your fit-check record
The measurement below is illustrative. Add your own observations to the notes above; this is not a product test.
| Check | Record | What it helps you assess |
|---|---|---|
| Chest measurement | 72 cm: fictional example | Compare only with the exact model’s chart |
| Adjustment range | Record the model’s limits | Whether adjustment can accommodate the measurement |
| Movement check | Record shifting, rubbing and turning | Comfort and position on your individual dog |
| Condition check | Record wear and fastening function | Whether the item remains suitable to use |
