Read a dog-food label beyond the front-of-pack claims

Start with the intended life stage and nutritional adequacy statement, then check ingredients, energy information and feeding directions. This guide uses a United States label example; other markets may use different wording.

Locate the adequacy statement

AAFCO explains that nutritional adequacy wording identifies the intended nutritional use. Distinguish adult maintenance from growth or other life-stage claims, and distinguish formulation-based statements from feeding-test statements. Ask your veterinarian how the stated use matches your dog. A marketing phrase on the front of the bag cannot answer that question.

Use the ingredient list in context

Read the ingredient list, but avoid using the first ingredient or a grain-free claim as a complete assessment of nutritional suitability. Keep the exact formula name and market visible when comparing products. Formulas and labels can change, so check the package you actually have.

Read energy and feeding directions together

Record the energy unit and the serving measurement used by the manufacturer. A measuring cup and a gram weight are different ways to describe an amount; do not assume every food has the same weight per cup. Feeding directions are a starting reference, not an individual prescription. Ask about portions in the context of condition, activity and health.

A real label example, checked October 13, 2026

Purina’s US label document for ONE Chicken & Rice Formula, code B415425, lists adult maintenance supported by AAFCO-procedure feeding tests. It lists 383 kcal per cup and a cup weight of 95 g. The annotations below explain what to record. This is a label-reading example, not a product endorsement or evidence that the food suits every Doberman.

Common questions

Does “adult maintenance” establish suitability for a growing puppy?

No. Discuss a product with the appropriate growth claim and your puppy’s needs with your veterinarian.

Does the first ingredient prove overall quality?

No. Assess the complete food and its intended use rather than one ingredient.
