Prepare a clear search area
Choose a nonslip floor away from stairs, cables and objects your dog might swallow. Use suitable food from your dog’s usual allowance, taking dietary restrictions into account. Practice with one dog at a time if food creates competition. Avoid scented oils or household chemicals as search targets.
Begin with a visible find
Let your dog see you place a small food reward in an open, reachable spot. Invite exploration without repeatedly directing their nose. If your dog does not engage, check comfort and reward suitability; do not withhold meals to force interest. Keep the first searches simple enough to succeed.
Hide less, then hide a little more
Move from a visible reward to one just out of direct sight in an accessible place. Change either the hiding position or the search area, not both at once. Never place food where reaching it encourages climbing, squeezing behind furniture or chewing containers.
A worked progression
Example: first place food on a clear mat, then beside the mat, then behind a safe freestanding object while your dog watches. If searching becomes frantic or your dog cannot find it, uncover the reward and return to an easier step. Record the easiest enjoyable search, not a speed score.
Finish while exploration is comfortable
Stop for avoidance, frustration, guarding or unsafe chewing. Remove remaining food and check the space after the game. Offer water and quiet rest. Games can enrich a routine but do not replace walks, individual exercise guidance or professional assessment of anxiety.

Common questions
Should I use essential oils?
Not for these beginner games. Use suitable food in safe, accessible locations rather than introducing concentrated scents.
Can scent games cure separation distress?
No. They are enrichment, not a substitute for assessment and an individualized support plan.
