Understand the breeding and puppy-raising plan
Ask why this pairing was chosen, how puppies are raised and what the breeder has observed about the parents. Discuss household fit and the support offered after placement. A useful conversation includes your circumstances as well as the breeder’s description of the litter.
Request records for the identifiable parents
Ask for registered names or other reliable identifiers, the actual relevant health reports and their dates. Use those details to verify public results where available. “Health tested” is incomplete without knowing which dog, which test and what result was recorded.
Discuss what the records do not establish
Screening and genetic information have different scopes. Ask a veterinarian for help interpreting reports and unresolved questions. Club membership, competition titles or a CHIC number should not be treated as a guarantee of health, suitability or future outcomes.
Read the agreement before committing
Review identification, placement conditions, included records, follow-up support and the process if circumstances change. Keep copies of the terms you considered. Do not rely on verbal assurances that contradict the written agreement or pay under a deadline that prevents verification.
An example: a report with no matching identifier
A prospective owner receives a test screenshot but cannot match it to the named parent. They ask for the complete report and matching registration details before making a decision. This illustrative record check is a practical question to resolve, not evidence of wrongdoing by a particular breeder.
